Warung Tinggi Coffee was started in 1878. The founder was Liauw Tek Soen, an immigrant from South China. He and his wife, an indigenous woman, opened a small shop on Jl Hayam Wuruk. Although other food and drink are around, legend says that the coffee sold more in demand compared to the competitors. And so Liaw Tek Soen proved to be an advanced coffee maker.
The local people name the shop Warung Tinggi (Warung means tent and Tinggi means high in Indonesian language) because the ground area is higher than the vicinity.
Back then , Liauw Tek Soen bought raw materials from a female vendor, who brought coffee beans in bamboo baskets on her head. Liaw then roast the coffee beans in large skillet, cooked, heated, and prepared. The image of the female vendor with the bamboo basket on her head then became the logo of Warung Tinggi.

Since then, the store name has changed and their families name as well.
